Power BI to Tableau: Rebuild and Compare

Business scenario

Orion's parent company uses Tableau; the retail team built its dashboard in Power BI. Leadership wants one sales dashboard available in both tools for a transition period.

Problem statement

Build the same sales dashboard in Power BI and Tableau and document the equivalent concepts (measures vs calculated fields, filter context vs LOD).

Learning objectives

  • Translate a data model between tools
  • Map DAX measures to Tableau calculations
  • Compare design capabilities

Instructions

Dashboard: KPI cards (revenue, orders, AOV, YoY), monthly trend, store × category matrix, top products. Numbers must match exactly across tools.

Tasks

  1. Star-schema model in Power BI with DAX measures.
  2. Equivalent Tableau data source and calculations (including a FIXED LOD).
  3. Reconcile numbers across tools.
  4. Comparison document: 10 concept mappings.

Deliverables

  • PBIX
  • TWBX
  • Comparison document
